NTT Com to Broaden Unified Communications Services for Arcstar Global IP-VPN
Type: News

NTT Communications Corp. (NTT Com) announced that its Arcstar Unified Communications Services will introduce the SIP Trunking Plan to allow Arcstar Global IP-VPN users to dial external lines for low- rate voice communications worldwide.

The Company said the service initially will be offered to customers in Singapore and then gradually expanded to cover other regions, making the plan available worldwide by March 2012. Incoming calls from external lines will be covered under the plan from April 2012 at the earliest.
According to a release, the SIP Trunking Plan will reduce total cost of ownership by unifying voice and data communications over Arcstar Global IP-VPN. Operation and maintenance will also be simplified by this one-stop solution combining the necessary systems and hardware for voice and data, including network and devices (VoIP gateway).

Arcstar Unified Communications Services currently offer IP-based internal dialing among global offices, including within Japan, under the Extension Plan. The newly expanded Arcstar Unified Communications Services will provide globally seamless unified voice, video, web conferencing, voice messaging, presence and instant messaging for Arcstar Global IP-VPN, backed by NTT Com's experience in networks, cloud computing and data centers.

To further meet growing market needs for low-cost worldwide internal/external voice-over-Internet-protocol (VoIP) services, Arcstar Unified Communications Services noted that it will add two more plans this year: the UCaaS (Unified Communications as a Service) Plan in August and the Contact Center Plan for globally seamless SaaS call-center services in December. Enterprise customers will be able to enhance the efficiency of their global communications by integrating these plans with the SIP Trunking Plan.

TAS:Cops lose phones, cars in Tas budget cuts

HOBART, Dec 1 AAP - Tasmanian police officers have sometimes been teased by their counterparts
across the country, but now there are two more reasons why they may face further ridicule.

The latest state government cost-cutting efforts will deprive officers of their mobile
phones - and some will even be losing their police vehicles.

Tasmania Police confirmed the planned budgetary cuts on Thursday, with 265 staff facing
the prospect of having their mobile phones taken away by January 1.

The move comes a few days after it was announced 31 cars would be removed from the police fleet.

Rank and file members are resisting the cuts, with one officer telling a Tasmanian
newspaper that the budgetary decisions were becoming ridiculous.

"People are already joking about police having to catch a taxi if there aren't any
cars available," the officer told the Mercury.

"Now we won't have a phone to call one."

Assistant Commissioner Phil Wilkinson said reducing the number of phones will save
$15,000 a month.

"The budget of the department of police and emergency management remains under considerable
pressure and all areas of expenditure are being continuously reviewed," he said in a statement.

"On-call duty is not considered a sufficient reason to be provided with a mobile telephone."

Officers ranked inspector or higher will retain their phone access, as will senior
executives and some support staff positions.

Comment was being sought from the Police Association of Tasmania but, ironically, the
union president could not be immediately reached on his mobile phone.

DirectEmployers Association Expands .Jobs Universe on the Internet
Type: News

DirectEmployers Association, a non-profit consortium of global employers, announced that it emphasized the importance of helping job seekers find open positions in their city and area of expertise, by expanding the .Jobs Universe on the internet.

"Unemployment remains high in the U.S., yet companies are picking up the pace of hiring and there are more open positions available than at any time since the downturn began," said Bill Warren, Executive Director of DirectEmployers Association and an early pioneer in online recruiting. "We need a more centralized, efficient way of connecting employers with job seekers and the .Jobs Universe is the answer. Now, by expanding the .Jobs Universe to include geographic locations and career specialty keywords, we are adding the capability for job seekers to easily search based on their location or area of expertise."
Adds Warren, "It's free. There is no cost to the employer, and no cost to the job seeker. All companies, regardless of size or industry, can list jobs free of charge, automatically enter new listings on a daily basis and automatically distribute job listings to relevant web sites. It's the most simple, powerful, cost- effective way to bring hiring companies together with qualified candidates."

According to a release, employers have rallied around the .Jobs platform since its launch in January, with jobs from over 90,000 employers. The .Jobs Universe was created to transform how people use the Internet to locate valid employment opportunities.

Rodney Moses, VP of Global Talent Acquisition for Blackberry manufacturer Research In Motion, said, "The .Jobs Universe creates an environment of seamlessly integrated employment domains which is revolutionary for the online recruitment industry. We are always seeking top-notch talent around the globe, and this initiative will help foster that effort."

Concurs Mike Rickheim, VP of Global Talent Acquisition for global consumer products marketer Newell Rubbermaid, "Newell Rubbermaid is always interested in identifying new avenues to attract and retain top talent. The .Jobs Universe launch represents one of the most promising and most innovative means of linking job seekers with hiring employers. This provides our organization with the opportunity to source and secure a diverse slate of highly- qualified talent in a cost-effective way."

Recently, questions have been raised about how the .Jobs Universe expansion will be governed. Warren said DirectEmployers Association is addressing these concerns while staying focused on the goal to make it easier and more efficient for job seekers to connect with hiring companies. "The support that we have received from job seekers and recruiting leaders is phenomenal. It speaks volumes about the direction and the potential of the .Jobs Universe."

WA: Fortescue bid to stop trial dismissed in Supreme Ct

WA: Fortescue bid to stop trial dismissed in Supreme Ct

PERTH, April 30 AAP - A bid by Fortescue Metals Group to avoid trial over the deaths
of two workers in a cyclone in Western Australia's Pilbara region has been thwarted in
the Supreme Court.

Lawyers for the group had asked Justice John McKechnie to halt the trial in the Perth
Magistrates Court and for a higher court to review Magistrate Joe Randazzo's decision
not to drop charges.

The charges of failing to provide and maintain a safe workplace at a rail construction
camp in the Pilbara were brought by Worksafe.

In the Supreme Court in Perth on Friday, Justice McKechnie dismissed Fortescue's applications,
meaning the trial will go ahead.

Fortescue had argued the charges should be dismissed as its safety management procedures
came under the Mines Safety and Inspection Act, not the Occupational Health and Safety
Act under which it was charged.

Magistrate Randazzo had ruled the charges needed redrafting but that was not cause
for their dismissal.

Fortescue has distanced itself from decisions made by contractors working at its accommodation
camp in the Pilbara, where two workers died during a cyclone in March 2007.

When category five Cyclone George hit the site linking Port Hedland to Fortescue's
first iron ore mine Cloudbreak, 275km/h winds broke up temporary accommodation buildings
and flattened the area.

Those killed were Perth mother of two Debra Till, 47, a kitchen-hand for property and
maintenance services company Spotless P&F Pty Ltd, and Craig Allan Raabe, 42, of Gympie
in Queensland, an employee of BCG Contracting.

There were also 22 injuries at the camp.

Fortescue and several contractors pleaded not guilty in December 2008 to a range of
charges, including failing to provide and maintain a safe workplace.

FED: Govt to open 40 one-stop welfare shops nation-wide by 2012

FED: Govt to open 40 one-stop welfare shops nation-wide by 2012

EDs: Reissingto correct number in headline and paragraph three to say 40 offices to
be in place by 2012 (not 60, as sent).

By Julian Drape

CANBERRA, Dec 16 AAP - First it was one-stop-shop GP super clinics. Now the Rudd government
plans to roll out "co-located" welfare offices, bringing together Centrelink, Medicare
and child support agencies under one roof.

Human Services Minister Chris Bowen announced the reform agenda on Wednesday, declaring
it had the potential to "revolutionise" the way Australians accessed government services.

Labor plans to have 20 one-stop welfare shops up and running around the country by
the end of next year. By 2012, around 40 co-located offices would be in place.

"In order to obtain the necessary seamlessness and co-ordination, the prime minister
has agreed to my proposal that Medicare and Centrelink should become part of the Department
of Human Services," Mr Bowen told the National Press Club in Canberra.

"In the process, we will bring together their IT, finance, property management, procurement
and human resources, freeing up back-office resources."

All human services agencies will have a single phone number by 2010.

There'll be one central website "to make dealing with government easier".

But Mr Bowen stressed both Medicare and Centrelink would retain their separate "brand"

identities. They'll also retain their own databases.

"We will not house an individual's personal, sensitive information in one place, vesting
all control with one body or one card," the minister stressed.

"This is not an Australia Card, and we will not be merging agency databases."

Information will only be shared if a person asks for that to occur "for their convenience".

The reform was also not about staff cuts, Mr Bowen said.

Any reductions in employee numbers would be met "primarily through natural attrition",
although the minister admitted "this reform will generate efficiencies and saving for
government".

Mr Bowen said the reforms would take several years to bear fruit, but could lead to
co-location and joint service delivery with other government departments down the track.

In a decade, state governments could also be co-locating their service delivery with
the commonwealth "both physically and through the internet".

Before the last election the Rudd government promised to roll out 35 GP super clinics
across the country.

But so far it's managed to open just one, and Health Minister Nicola Roxon has admitted
they won't all be operating until late 2011.

Mr Bowen on Wednesday denied the problems with the one-stop medical shops meant the
welfare offices would suffer a similar fate.

"I don't underestimate the difficulty," he said.

"But I would not have made the announcement unless I was confident we can achieve it."

Each year the human services portfolio delivers $100 billion in payments.

It has 361,000 face-to-face contacts, 222,000 phone calls and 70,000 online transactions
every day.

In 2009 the department responded to 11 major emergencies, including the Victorian bushfires
and the Queensland floods.

NSW: I know those who are plotting against me: Rees

AAP General News (Australia)

NSW: I know those who are plotting against me: Rees

By Nick Ralston, State Political Reporter

SYDNEY, Aug 7 AAP - NSW Premier Nathan Rees says he knows which of his parliamentary
colleagues are orchestrating repeated plots to unsettle his leadership.

While refusing to name them, Mr Rees has acknowledged there are people in caucus working
against him after just 11 months in the top job.

His frank admission came amid renewed speculation a leadership challenge is imminent,
but this time with Health Minister John Della Bosca the potential challenger.

Mr Della Bosca on Friday stood alongside Mr Rees at the opening of a new hospital in
Newcastle and denied he was behind such a plot.

But Mr Della Bosca would not rule out a future tilt at the leadership, saying he did
not deal in hypotheticals.

The minister did stress it was important that Mr Rees, who became premier after only
18 months in parliament, was given a chance.

Mr Rees attempted to play down suggestions his grip on his position will be under threat
when NSW parliament resumes in the first week of September.

"For months now I wake up to these yarns. I haven't seen one for six weeks or so, so
it was about time there was another one and here it is," Mr Rees told reporters in Newcastle.

He said he believed he was getting a "fair go" from his MPs, but then qualified that
answer by saying some MPs had been expending their efforts for the wrong reasons.

"I get frustrated on occasions when I see colleagues not attending to the job they
should be doing and that is doing their best for their communities," he said.

"I simply try and lead by example, people get a day out of me every day, I expect the
rest of the caucus to do the same.

"The vast bulk of them do that, on occasions some of them get distracted."

Mr Della Bosca insisted he was not one of those MPs, that Mr Rees had his support and
that he was happy being the health minister.

Even if he wanted to mount a leadership challenge, Mr Della Bosca would have obstacles
to overcome.

The biggest of them would be securing enough support from the Right faction, with a
Labor source telling AAP Mr Della Bosca was still well short of the required numbers.

To overcome that shortfall, he needs to win over key powerbrokers Joe Tripodi and Eddie
Obeid and that was unlikely to happen, the source said.

Convention also states that the premier should serve in the lower house, but Mr Della
Bosca currently sits in the upper house.

A switch would require a by-election in a safe Labor seat but speculation he could
replace dumped minister Tony Stewart in the southwestern Sydney seat of Bankstown has
been dismissed by both men.

Deputy Premier Carmel Tebbutt, another who has been touted as a possible replacement
leader, said on Friday she was happy working as a team with Mr Rees.

Another prospective leadership challenger, former planning minister Frank Sartor, was
not commenting on Friday.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has also thrown his support behind Mr Rees, saying
the NSW leader has a tough job ahead of him.

Mr Rudd is said to have a frosty relationship with Mr Rees.

FED: James Tomkins may not be ready to give up on Olympic dream

SYDNEY, Aug 26 AAP - Maybe it was the excitement of the rock star welcome home, but
six-time Olympian James Tomkins has again indicated he's not quite ready to give up on
his Olympic career.

Taking part in the official welcome home address to the athletes at Sydney airport
today, the rowing legend signalled he may have another shot at Olympic glory at the London
2012 Games.

"For those Olympians who are finishing up with these games congratulations and good
luck with whatever path you take in future," he said.

"For those of us who may be going on to London, start preparing and as (Australian
Olympic Committee boss) John (Coates) said and the prime minister (Kevin Rudd), I think
it's only appropriate we spoil the party over in London."

Following his brief speech, Tomkins was asked by the Nine Network to clarify his intentions.

"I haven't made my mind up at all but I was talking with (teammate) Drew (Ginn) just
a couple of nights ago and we were saying, 'Well, if it is possible, then why wouldn't
you?

"Like I said, to get a welcome like this, to be a part of a fantastic team ... it really
is addictive and I would love to do it again, if possible."

Tomkins, an original member of the Oarsome Foursome, has won three gold medals at his
six Olympics.

He missed out on a fourth in Beijing, which was expected to be his last Games.

After his last race Tomkins had said retirement was likely.

"I'd love to have another crack, but I don't think it's feasible," he said.

"It's just hard to leave it here."

Today he said he was proud to have been the Australian flag-bearer at the opening ceremony
in Beijing.

"Before the opening ceremony, I said I was immensely proud to be leading the team and
to have all of Australia behind the team," Tomkins said.

"And to come back here and realise the enormity of the achievement of the team - it's
absolutely phenomenal."

AT&T Secures 13-Site VPN and Remote Access Pacts from TPO Displays

WIRELESS NEWS-February 11, 2007-AT&T Secures 13-Site VPN and Remote Access Pacts from TPO Displays (C)2007 10Meters - http:// www.10meters.com

AT&T announced that TPO Displays Corp (TPO) has selected AT&T to deploy a Virtual Private Network (VPN) solution to connect TPO's multiple sites with support for voice and data communications.
Formed in June by the merger of Taiwan's Toppoly Optoelectronics Corp. and Netherlands-based Philips Mobile Display Systems (MDS) unit, TPO said is a provider of mobile display solutions.

Under the two-year agreement valued at more than US$600,000, AT&T will connect TPO's 13 offices in 12 countries across Asia Pacific, Europe, North America and Africa. This is one of the largest implementations of AT&T's VPN solution in the Asia Pacific region, and this solution will help TPO complete a complex integration of legacy IT infrastructure from Philips MDS and Toppoly, including the seamless transfer of voice and data services to connect TPO's diverse locations. As part of the agreement, AT&T will also deploy the AT&T Network-based VPN Remote Access solution, which will provide extended roaming and Wi-Fi services for remote access users with simultaneous secure access to both the Internet and intranet, among a host of other features.

"Integrating the various IT systems of the two founding partners of TPO is an immense challenge with the scale and geographic spread of our operations. Moreover, our existing networks were not enabled for voice communication," said YY Chang, vice president of TPO. "After a stringent evaluation process, we chose AT&T for their capabilities in managing such a complex networking project as well as for the flexibility in the solution offered, which is tailored to meet our unique requirements. With this deployment, we expect cost savings to nearly US$1 million annually."

Before the merger of MDS and Toppoly, the companies used International Private Lines (IPL), which was no longer a viable option for TPO. With the company running its critical ERP systems across the network, it was very important to find a robust, reliable and scalable solution that would meet TPO's future plans as well.

"We are very pleased that TPO has chosen AT&T for this challenging networking project," said Scott Lin, AT&T Taiwan general manager. "We are working very closely with TPO to ensure the success of this deployment. We expect to continue to support them with advanced and cost-effective network integration services after the completion of this project."

Resorts (SYDNEY)

Foreign Minister ALEXANDER DOWNER refused to act on a request from Justice Minister
CHRIS ELLISON to change travel advisories for Bali hotels after two Australian children
were sexually abused at exclusive island resorts.

The Australian newspaper says Senator ELLISON sent the request on behalf of two families
whose children were sexually abused while holidaying on the Indonesian island.

The newspaper says a three-year-old girl was sexually abused and contracted gonorrhoea
while at a creche at a Sheraton resort in January 2001, while in a separate incident,
a five-year-old boy was orally raped at a resort playground.

The girl's family had sought a change to advisories listing the Bali hotel resorts
whose childcare facilities did not meet Australian standards.

However, according to correspondence obtained by the ABC's Lateline program expected
to go to air tonight, Mr DOWNER advised Senator ELLISON there were too many hotels to
list in such an advisory.

Poll (SYDNEY)

A new poll says voters think Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD is a greater asset to the government
than Treasurer PETER COSTELLO.

The Sydney Morning Herald has published a poll conducted by ACNielsen finding 46 per
cent of respondents think Mr HOWARD has done a better job as prime minister than Mr COSTELLO
as treasurer.

Twenty-six per cent think the reverse while thirteen per cent say the two men contribute equally.

Meanwhile, Labor has a four point lead over the government for the second month in
a row on a two party preferred basis, with Opposition Leader KIM BEAZLEY'S approval rating
jumping six points to 55 per cent.

Approval for Mr HOWARD is down 14 points to 53 per cent.

Track (PERTH)

The bodies of two men have been found after they died up to two weeks ago in the scorching
sun of the Gibson Desert in Western Australia.

The men, aged 21 and 40, left the Pilbara town of Newman after refuelling on March
the 28th after they'd set off on their journey without telling anyone of their intentions.

Inspector GEORGE PUTLAND of police communications in Perth says the men, originally
from New South Wales, were ill-prepared for their trip.

Inspector PUTLAND says the men's bodies were found next to their Land Rover on the
Talawana Track, 51km east of the Cotton Creek turn-off on Friday.

He says the men were travelling in an old, run-down vehicle and had taken little water
on the trip during which temperatures in the area had reached into the 40s.

The pair, and their dog which died with them, were found on April the 8th by a stationhand,
but their bodies were retrieved by police only yesterday because of the time it took the
stationhand to get back to raise the alarm.

NZ Qantas (SYDNEY)

Qantas says a near miss between one of its Boeing 747's and a similar Air New Zealand
jet posed no danger to any of the passengers or crew.

Qantas representative CHRIS MANNING says the airline is working with transport authorities
on their investigations into the incident, over Auckland International Airport on Saturday.

But, he says, Qantas is satisfied that the incident did not represent danger to either plane.

New Zealand's Transport Accident Investigation Commission says the two jets were unacceptably
close and infringed the required separation between aircraft when the incident occurred.

Captain MANNING says Qantas has provided information on the incident to the Australian
Transport Safety Bureau, which is assisting the New Zealanders with their investigation.

Chopper Defence (CANBERRA)

The Defence Department has rejected claims that Sea King helicopters attached to HMAS
Kanimbla are regarded by Navy sailors as a joke.

One of the choppers crashed on Indonesia's Nias island earlier this month, killing nine people.

A Navy whistleblower has claimed the ship's two Sea King helicopters were often taken
out of service because of problems.

But a Defence spokesman says the two Sea Kings were available for missions 90 per cent
of the time during the ship's aid work in Indonesian waters in the wake of the Boxing
Day tsunami and Easter Monday earthquake.

Wage (MELBOURNE)

The ACTU has called for a guarantee that there will be no fall in real wages under
changes to the industrial relations system.

Secretary GREG COMBET says he's written to Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD seeking an assurance
that the real value of minimum wages will be maintained in any changes made by the government.

The changes are set to be pushed through parliament when the federal government takes
control of the Senate in the second half of the year.

They're expected to include the establishment of a new tribunal to set the minimum wage.

Mr COMBET's letter says a commitment that real wages won't fall would give basic security
to 1.5 million Australians whose living standards depend on wage increases.

Workplace Howard (CANBERRA)

Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD says almost all workers will be covered by national industrial
laws under changes proposed by the federal government.

Mr HOWARD says the government is close to finalising its latest round of industrial reforms.

He says he still holds out some hope of the states and territories, all of which have
Labor governments, cooperating to change the system.

The Prime Minister says the current system of 2,300 federal and 1,700 state awards
which overlap is too complex, costly and inefficient.

He says the ideal would be a single system.

Fiji Gay Protest (SYDNEY)

Protesters have urged the federal government to help an Australian man jailed in Fiji
for having gay sex with a local man.

A small group of demonstrators gathered outside the Fijian Consulate in Sydney today
to picket against the jailing of Australian university lecturer THOMAS MCCOSKAR.

The 55-year-old was last week sentenced to two years jail for having consensual sex
with 23-year-old DHIRENDRA NANDAN in Nadi, in Fiji.

Gay sex is illegal in Fiji, a conservative Christian nation, and carries a jail sentence
of up to 14 years.

Australian Greens Senator KERRY NETTLE joined the protesters, calling on both the Fijian
and Australian governments to work on repealing anti-gay laws in Fiji.

Bacon (HOBART)

Embattled Tasmanian Tourism Minster KEN BACON has resigned, citing ill health.

Mr BACON has been under pressure over the state government-owned ship Spirit of Tasmania
III, which recently needed a $115 million taxpayer-funded bailout.

But Premier PAUL LENNON says Mr BACON has been a successful tourism minister and thanked
him for his efforts.

He says no one should underestimate the strain of public life.

Opposition Leader RENE HIDDING says if Mr BACON is sick he wishes him well.

India Flood (BHOPAL)

A discharge of water from a dam has swept away scores of Hindu pilgrims while they
were praying on the banks of the Narmada River in central India, leaving at least 53 dead.

The chief minister of the central state of Madhya Pradesh, BABULAL GAUR, told reporters
today that the bodies of 53 people were recovered over the weekend from Dharaji, near
Dewas, some 300 kilometres from the state capital Bhopal.

He says rescue operations are still being carried out as the search for more people
continues, with 35 people still reported missing.

According to witnesses, some 25,000 people had gathered on the banks of the Narmada
at Dharaji to offer prayers during a two-day festival which started Thursday when the
river rose suddenly.

Bangladesh Factory (PALASH BARI)

Up to 200 workers are believed trapped in the rubble of an eight-storey factory building
that collapsed in Bangladesh today, killing at least 20 people.

Police spokesman NAZRUL ISLAM says the concrete building, packed with night-shift workers,
caved in soon after midnight when a boiler exploded.

Firefighters using shovels and bare hands dug frantically as survivors called for help
from beneath the debris and distraught relatives gathered at the scene.

Survivors who were working at the Spectrum Sweater and Knitting Industries factory,
30km north-west of Dhaka, says the building collapsed after a loud explosion.

AND IN SPORT:

AFL UMPIRING (Melbourne)

The AFL admits a goal umpire made a crucial mistake in yesterday's Essendon-Hawthorn
match at the MCG.

Bomber DEAN SOLOMON was awarded a goal in the last quarter when it should have been
a behind, minutes before Essendon won by just two points.

But umpiring director JEFF GIESCHEN has backed his field umpires after a series of
50m penalties were paid in Saturday night's Brisbane-Sydney game for verbal abuse.

GIESCHEN has also supported the umpires in the Collingwood-Carlton match, after Magpies
coach MICK MALTHOUSE claimed his team received a bath from free kick decisions.

AFL TRIBUNAL (Melbourne)

Carlton onballer HEATH SCOTLAND will answer a gouging charge at tonight's AFL tribunal

Barmecide

Barmecide, Barmecide's feast According to the “The Barber's Story of his Sixth Brother” in the Tales from the Arabian Nights, Barmecide is an illusion, particularly one containing a great disappointment. The story begins in Baghdad, where a member of the Barmecide family decides to amuse himself. He invites Schacabac, a poor, starving wretch, to dinner. Having set before him a series of empty plates, the Barmecide asks, “How do you like your soup?” “Excellently well,” replies Schacabac. “Did you ever see whiter bread?” “Never, honorable sir.” When illusory wine is offered, Schacabac pretends to be drunk and knocks his host down. Barmecide sees the humor in the situation, forgives him, and provides him with a sumptuous meal.

A Barmecide feast is an empty pretense of hospitality or generosity. One who offers false and disappointing benefits is a Barmecide. The adjective Barmecidal means unreal, illusory.

Getting olive oils straight

With all the kinds of olive oil on the supermarket shelves, what should you buy? Here's a look from the North American Olive Oil Association:

* Extra-virgin olive oil. This comes from the first cold pressing of select olives, a chemical-free process without refining. Extra-virgin olive oil is about 1 percent acid, offers the widest variety of flavors and aromas and is usually more expensive than other types.

* Virgin olive oil. Also a first-press oil, with a slightly higher level of acidity.

* Olive oil. This is a blend of refined olive oil and virgin or extra-virgin oils.

* ``Light'' or ``mild'' olive oil. This is refined olive oil blended with some extra-virgin. It is not lighter in fat or calories but may be useful for some cooking purposes, since it is lighter in color and flavor.

A general rule: You can cook with olive oil, but after food is prepared, season or drizzle with extra-virgin olive oil for its fuller flavor.

Deep-fry foods in light olive oil because it has a high smoking point that will get the foods golden brown with less risk of burning. - Associated Press

A variation on yellow

In 1904, George F. French introduced his upstart yellow mustard as mild enough for salad dressings. In fact, the original name of his mustard was French's Cream Salad Mustard, according to The Food Chronology, and it soon claimed to have outpaced sales of all other mustards combined. But no mustard can rest on its laurels forever. Introducing French's Sweet Onion, yellow mustard with real (real, in this case, means dried) onions already in it. The taste is pleasingly sweet and would be good - here's a revelation - on hot dogs. Wow, I think I'm on to something here. - Marty Meitus

Fiber Optic Lines to Link Philadelphia's Catholic Schools, Offices.

Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News

Sep. 26--Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua announced yesterday that fiber-optic cable is being installed to link Roman Catholic schools and offices throughout the five-county Archdiocese of Philadelphia.

"Today, we take another step on the road to success by merging our schools onto the world's `information superhighway,'" Cardinal Bevilacqua said.

The telecommunication network, which will take three years to complete, will go first to the 22 diocesan high schools, with a combined enrollment of 23,100 students. Seven of them already are connected to high-speed Internet access, and the rest will be added to the network by spring, the cardinal said.

Cardinal Bevilacqua said the network then will be extended to Catholic social-service facilities, St. Charles Borromeo Seminary, other archdiocesan offices, and all 287 parishes.

"This school year, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia becomes the first diocese in the country to create a comprehensive diocesan-wide fiber-optic network," he said.

The estimated $1.5 million cost of installing the infrastructure for the network is being born by PECO Hyperion, a venture of PECO Energy Co. and the Adelphia Communications Corp. Hyperion unit.

In return, the archdiocese will use PECO Hyperion as its telephone-service provider. The company has assured the archdiocese that the switch will result in substantial savings on telephone costs and provide upgraded digital phone service.

"The arrangement is that we switch our dial-tone services to PECO Hyperion, and they will do the front-end of wiring and construction of the fiber," said Brother Joseph Willard, assistant to the vicar for administration. "They also guarantee us a reduction, across the board, of approximately 30 percent of [the cost of] our dial-tone service."

Peter K. Murray, general manager of PECO Hyperion, said his company would recoup its costs through the revenues generated by telephone voice service, and would benefit by being able to market its services to other customers near the fiber-optic network.

"It is a win-win situation," Murray said. "It is really for both of our advantages."

The announcement was made at John W. Hallahan Catholic Girls High School in Center City, the first school to be put on the network.

Using a school library terminal, senior Jennifer O'Brien showed Cardinal Bevilacqua how she was searching the Internet to gather information about organ donation for a paper for her theology class.

"It is amazing what they can do now," the cardinal said.

Brother Willard said that the archdiocese began exploring networking options after the Learning Edge, a consulting firm in Tappan, N.Y., conducted a technical analysis of the Catholic schools last year. While each Catholic high school decides how to use technol--ogy, the consultants urged the archdiocese to assist them by creating a network that would provide cheaper and faster Internet service.

All the schools will be linked to the Office of Catholic Education so that information such as attendance records, student rosters and grades can be shared instantly.

The other high schools that linked to the network this month are: St. John Neumann, South Philadelphia; St. Maria Goretti, South Philadelphia; Conwell-Egan, Fairless Hills; Archbishop Prendergast, Drexel Hill; Cardinal O'Hara, Springfield; and Monsignor Bonner, Drexel Hill.

Sinclair Broadcast Group Buys 'Ring of Honor' Wrestling Franchise.

Sinclair Broadcast Group, Inc. announced that it has acquired the "Ring of Honor" wrestling (ROH) franchise.

"We are very excited about this acquisition," said Steve Marks, COO of Sinclair's Television Group. "Television and professional wrestling have a long history of successful partnerships and driving viewership. Unfortunately, the broadcast networks have not protected that relationship, allowing professional wrestling to migrate to cable network distribution. We believe that the powerful promotional platform that our TV stations provide, coupled with our 22 percent coverage of the U.S. TV households, will allow ROH to achieve name brand recognition and grow its share of the wrestling market. When you consider the make-up of our station mix and the number of CW, MYTV and FOX affiliates we operate, this is a perfect fit for our viewer demographics."

Marks continued, "We believe that ROH will provide us with multiple revenue opportunities. In addition to the advertising component, there are product sponsorships, Internet pay-per-view, live wrestling tour events, and sales of DVDs and other merchandise. Longer-term, we can envision syndicating ROH wrestling to broadcasters in markets where Sinclair does not have a presence and even internationally. We believe there are opportunities to broadcast ROH wrestling on our secondary tier channels or in a mobile environment. The acquisition also means less syndicated product that we will be required to purchase, and since we own the franchise, we control how many times, which dayparts and on which affiliates we want to air the matches without having the limitation on the number of runs or license fee costs."

"We have been waiting and working for this opportunity for quite some time," said Cary Silkin, owner of ROH. "Of our 9 years in business, there has been no better roster of wrestlers than this one to expose the ROH product to the masses. With Sinclair's resources and many avenues of distribution, we believe many new fans will be as captivated as those who have followed Ring of Honor over the years."

ROH will be headed by Joe Koff, COO of Ring of Honor. Koff, who has been with Sinclair since 2003 and most recently served as Director of Sales, has a long established career in television broadcasting sales and management, as well as managing wrestling content. Koff was responsible for personally creating, producing, marketing, syndicating, and selling barter inventory in what was to become "The Battle of the Belts I, II, III."

While the Ring of Honor acquisition includes primarily intellectual property and equipment, several existing ROH employees will be hired including longtime pro wrestling personality and matchmaker, Jim Cornette, who will serve as VP of Creative. Veteran promoter, Gary Juster, will join as VP of Operations, and Cary Silkin will remain in an advisory role. Ring of Honor features such stars as ROH World Champion, Eddie Edwards; World Tag Team Champions, Charlie Haas and Shelton Benjamin; and top contenders Davey Richards and the Kings of Wrestling. In addition, to Ring of Honor's '"best-in-ring" wrestling talent, ROH fans can expect to see other familiar faces such as longtime wrestling broadcaster Kevin Kelly, already the voice of ROH internet pay-per-views, who will assume the TV play-by-play chair this fall, ring announcer Bobby Cruise and senior referee Todd Sinclair.

A press conference, open to the wrestling press and mainstream media alike, is being planned for in Baltimore, Maryland on Friday, June 24th. This event will feature a number of the ROH staff and wrestlers. The press event will kick off a weekend which includes ROH's next internet pay-per-view event, "Best in the World 2011," live from the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York City on Sunday, June 26th at 4PM EDT. In addition to all the top stars on the ROH roster, this event will feature the return of some favorite stars from Ring of Honor's past, and can be ordered through Gofightlive.tv.

Ring of Honor wrestling, synonymous with best-in-ring action in the sport, organized in 2001 and was most recently syndicated on the cable network, HDNET. ROH is known for its athleticism and professional wrestling style while providing fans an entertaining, hard hitting performance.

Ring of Honor produces weekly 1-hour television wrestling match programs and stages more than two dozen live events in various cities per year.

For the Dodge Caliber enthusiast, a new Stage 1 turbo kit promises head-jarring performance. New crate engines are available this year with 340ci six-pack and 410ci six-pack V-8 options. Also, a 440 short-block estimated at 530 hp and 540 lb. ft. of torque, is available right out of the box.

Mopar Chassis Performance Parts

Mopar couldn't improve the power and looks without creating products to keep the vehicle on the track or dirt road. A new coil-over suspension kit takes technology from the Dodge Viper ACR suspension and passes it on to the Dodge Challenger and Dodge Caliber. New lift kits for the all-new 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 and Jeep Wrangler further improve the capability of these vehicles and make room for bigger tires.

In addition, new for 2009, Mopar is offering a variety of new axles that have never been available, including Dana 44 upgrades for Jeep Wrangler and stock Dodge Power Wagon axles. These upgrades are for the hard-core off-roader who wants to go everywhere.

Seventy Years of Mopar

When Chrysler bought Dodge in 1928, the need for a dedicated parts manufacturer, supplier and distribution system to support the growing enterprise led to the formation of the Chrysler Motor Parts Corporation (CMPC) in 1929.

Mopar (a simple contraction of the words MOtor and PARts) was trademarked for a line of antifreeze products in 1937. It was also widely used as a moniker for the CMPC. The Mopar brand made its mark in the 1960s -- the muscle car era. The Chrysler Corporation built race-ready Dodge and Plymouth "package cars" equipped with special high-performance parts. Mopar carried a line of "Special Parts" for super stock drag racers and developed its racing parts division, which was called Mopar Performance Parts, to enhance speed and handling for both road and racing use.

Today, Chrysler LLC's Global Service & Parts division is responsible for the manufacturing and distribution of nearly 250,000 authentic Mopar replacement parts, components and accessories for Chrysler, Jeep(R) and Dodge vehicles sold around the world. To assure quality, reliability and durability, all Mopar parts and accessories are designed in strict adherence to Chrysler engineering standards. For more information, go to http://www.mopar.com/.

Treasure Hunting Made Smarter: Shopgoodwill.com Adds Improved Search to Popular Internet Auction Site.

Byline: Goodwill Industries International

SANTA ANA, Calif., Nov. 27 (AScribe Newswire) -- Shopgoodwill.com, the nation's first and only nonprofit Internet auction site, is making it easier for treasure hunters and other online shoppers to find exactly what they are looking for. In addition to a crisp, new look, the redesigned site offers an improved search function that allows bidders to quickly preview thumbnail images of items.

"Shopgoodwill.com has over 75 categories and subcategories, from antiques and toys to one-of-a-kind collectible items," says George W. Kessinger, President and CEO of Goodwill Industries International. "The new web site improves search capabilities, providing the best possible experience for our online shoppers."

Shopgoodwill.com is the first and only auction site created, owned and operated by a nonprofit organization. Since its launch in 1999, it has earned more than $50 million dollars for Goodwill programs. More than 18,000 items are for sale at any given time, culled from the billions of pounds of donated goods the organization collects each year. All the proceeds benefit Goodwill Industries.

"With 83 percent of revenues going directly into Goodwill's job training and other programs, shoppers can feel good about their purchases," says Kessinger. "And they feel protected because the items all come from one source with an internationally-respected brand name - Goodwill Industries. It's like buying something from someone you know."

The site has retained its most popular features such as its Personal Shopper, which sends bidders e-mail alerts when items they are looking for are posted, and the Watch List, which allows shoppers to return quickly to items without searching for them again. Also, shopgoodwill.com is now designed to provide easy navigation to bidders using a cell phone or other mobile device as well as an assistive technology, such as a screen reader.

"And we hope our new look will attract many new buyers," says Kessinger. "After all, you never know what treasures you'll find when you shopgoodwill.com." With an average of 31,500 visits per day, shopgoodwill.com is an Internet auction site that successfully coexists with the big-name online auctioneers.
